A Parish of the TRUE ORTHODOX CHURCH OF THE DIASPORA

About Us

The story of our parish is one that both inspires and gives faith in humanity in a time when it can often be lacking..

It began several years ago when Father Mike (now Archbishop Nicholas) would walk his friend’s dog , Dave, while he was at work.  On these walks they usually found themselves at the top of the next street, where a woman named Yvonne was usually out in her yard tending to her flowers.  The trio would usually engage in pleasant conversation (in Dave’s case begging to be petted) and enjoy each other’s company.  It was a stop that was looked forward to both by Dave and Father Mike.

Dave

In the late spring of 2020, Father heard that a little church around the corner from Dave’s home was actually owned by their friend Yvonne.  The church had not been in active use for a few years.  On a walk one day, he asked Yvonne about the church, and if she might be interested in renting it for use by the parish.  To his great amazement, she responded that she couldn’t rent it to him because she couldn’t ask for any money for the church.  Instead, she simply said, “It’s yours”.  Not only did this amazing woman give us the church, but she has become an integral part of it , continuing to help as work to transform the church for Orthodox worship and  work on the renovation of the parish hall.   As of January 7, 2021, services are held weekly in the church, even as we continue renovations.

The most important thing that we learned from this story is that God has a plan that we don’t always see at the time, and one that may not be revealed for years.  Also, we’re reminded that it’s always good to be kind to strangers, and it sure doesn’t hurt to have a dog.
